This my shit
Yesterday started off (late, but we finally got a full night of sleep) walking around Brattleboro, guided by two sweet hand drawn maps from our wonderful friends Emily and Ryan (when Ryan is a famous comic artist, we are going to sell this and be rich). We checked out all the standard hippie digs: Mocha Joe’s coffee, the hemp paradise Save the Corporations from Themselves, a great thrift shop, and the local food co-op (plus their discount “expired” food store).
Then, on to Portland, Maine, where we stayed with an old buddy Oscar, who mopped all his floors in our honor. First stop, delicious thai food, complete with thai iced tea and mango sticky rice. But the night couldn’t possibly end without some karaoke at the local sports bar (the floors looked like a basketball court, thank god I was wearing my nike dunks). Oscar slowed it down a bit with some Steely Dan, and Em & I closed off the night with a crowd pleasing rendition of “Hollaback Girl” (b-a-n-a-n-a-s). Unfortunately, we left our camera back at our temporary residence, so these camera phone pics will have to do.
Today was another lazy morning, making it out of the house for breakfast sandwiches when we should have been having afternoon tea and crumpets. We brought our hummus bialy and veggie sausage, egg and cheese sandwiches to the Head Light in Portland to enjoy beautiful weather and stunning views, and also play in a fortress. To cool off from the sun, we headed over to Shipyard brewery where we sampled some fine beers, and their craft fruity sodas.
As it approached dinner time, we piled into our packed car to head to Brunswick, Maine for some famous Lobster Roll, onion rings, and Frappe. The Fat Boy did have some amazing food, but what’s even better is that its an old fashion drive-in (roller skates not included, unfortunately), so we got to add some additional food stains to the inside of my car. And finally, we closed off the night with a romantic drive through scenic coastal Maine, cutting through Orrs and Bailey Island to Land’s End gift shop (I was pretty disappointed that you can’t buy khakis there, that’s apparently in Wisconsin).
Better late than never
Well, it’s been a whirlwind two days. Let’s catch up.
Leaving Jersey City took about 30 times longer than anticipated…with 0 sleep and what we thought was WAY too many boxes to fit into our teeny Toyota Corolla, we were bummed. BUT, alas, our seriously incredible and super-hero-esque neighbor, Mark, helped us shove and shimmy everything around. We love him.
We left a bit late and a bit bleary eyed, but the excitement of our trip pumped through our veins…for a few minutes until we stopped for McDonald’s (don’t cringe yet) Newman’s Own ORGANIC iced coffee. What? you say. Yes, dirt cheap and delicious organic yum yum stuff.
Next we stopped off for some delicious clam pizza in New Haven, CT. We arrived only to find out that our intended clammy destination, Sally’s Apizza, required about 2.5 hours waiting and eating time, so we skipped down the road to another (we think equally yummy) pizza joint, Abate. Clam pizza= two thumbs up.
Finally, we cruised into Brattleboro, VT, pulled up to an old beautiful house…with a lawn, and were welcomed by our amazing friends, Emily and Ryan. After some dinner, we hit the town for a comprehensive tour and some seriously spunky beers, Old Ringworm and Pullman’s Porter. Then, went to bed with the cool fresh VT air blowing in the window. We couldn’t have imagined a better place to stay or a more comfortable sleeper sofa on our first night and we owe it all to Ryan and Emily. You guys rock.
Next stop…Portland, ME.
